Tucked away in Rothiemurchus Forest, enjoy dramatic views, exceptional wildlife, and the ruins of a 13th-century island castle at Loch an Eilein. Walking around the Loch is fairly easy, and part of the Rothiemurchus marked network of paths. It was voted as Britain’s Best Picnic Spot in 2010, so don’t forget to bring a basket. Wildlife enthusiasts should look out for protected red squirrels and listen for the distinctive song of the Scottish crossbills. You can even soak up some culture at the Loch’s gallery, displaying local artwork.
