El Ghriba Synagogue, Djerba Island

#1 of 8 in Historic Sites in Djerba Island
Religious Site · Tourist Spot
Although a similar structure probably stood here as long ago as 586 BCE, El Ghriba Synagogue was built during the 20th century. Decorated with shades of aqua blue, green, and white, the synagogue has a light and breezy look to it, complemented by the openness of the central courtyard. In what was once an all-Jewish town, the building stands as the island's best-preserved reminder of Jewish history in the country, attracting many pilgrims throughout the year. • Never visited a synagogue before, was interesting. People praying there had friendly attitude to tourists.  more »
  • Very peaceful sacred place, small but holds big history. There were two religious gentleman praying. You have to cover your head to go inside.  more »
  • After passing through security, you’re rewarded with an absolutely stunning synagogue. There’s a man who was sitting by the door asking money for entry but I had no change and he waived me through - pretty sure he’s unofficial. Beautiful location and humbling memorial to the lives lost during the massacre at the same site
  • Also another great historical place of Djerba to visit, must visit
