Little more than a small town at the turn of the 20th century, Dushanbe grew rapidly during the Soviet era and now serves as the national capital and home to nearly 800,000 people.
You've now added Pamir Highway to your itinerary. You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Fann Mountains and Monument to Abu Ali Ibn Sino (Avicenna). Escape the urban bustle at Varzob and Iskanderkul Lake. The adventure continues: pause for some photo ops at Statue of Ismoil Somoni, walk around Rudaki Park, don't miss a visit to Flagpole with the Flag of Tajikistan, and get engrossed in the history at National Museum of Tajikistan.

For other places to visit, photos, and more tourist information, refer to the Dushanbe online trip itinerary planner.

For many, a trip to Khujand happens en route from Uzbekistan or Kyrgyzstan to the scenic Fann Mountains or Zeravshan Valley.
Step off the beaten path and head to Kamal Khujandi Statue and Park Kamal Khudzhandi. There's still lots to do: appreciate the history behind Monument to Ismoil Somoni, take in the spiritual surroundings of Masjidi Jami Mosque, stroll around Somoni park, and explore the activities along Kayrakkum Reservoir.
