For sixty years until 2003, most of the Isla de Vieques was closed off to the public, with the US Navy using the island's beaches and surrounding waters for drills and testing of new military machinery, such as bombs.
On the 8th (Sun), take an in-depth tour of Fortin Conde de Mirasol Museum and then stroll through Sun Bay. On the next day, kick back and relax at Media Luna Beach, then view the masterpieces at Gallery Galleon, and then tour the pleasant surroundings at Blue Beach.

Satisfy your inner culture vulture at Old San Juan and San Juan National Historic Site. Head to Puerto Rican Art & Crafts and Plaza las Americasfor plenty of shopping. Venture out of the city with trips to Caribbean Trading Company Store (in Palmer) and El Yunque Rain Forest (in El Yunque National Forest). There's still lots to do: get engrossed in the history at Cathedral of San Juan Bautista and look for gifts at Coqui el Original.

With much of Culebra a nature refuge, the tropical island has been protected from overdevelopment, chain hotels, and the cruise set.
Kick off your visit on the 14th (Sat): tour the pleasant surroundings at Playa Punta Soldado Beach and then enjoy the sand and surf at Flamenco Beach. Here are some ideas for day two: stop by Zinkowski Art Studio and then kick back and relax at Zoni Beach.
