One of the island of Hawaii's major towns, Hilo contains a mix of Asian and Polynesian cultures and is known for its proximity to a national park encompassing two active volcanoes.
Visit Puukohola National Historic Park and The Puako Petroglyphs for their historical value. Get in touch with nature at Swim with Dolphins and Volcano Art Center Gallery. Get out of town with these interesting Hilo side-trips: Jagger Museum (in Volcano), Laupahoehoe Beach Park (in Laupahoehoe) and Hapuna Beach State Recreation Area (in Puako). There's still lots to do: take in nature's colorful creations at Liliuokalani Gardens, wander the streets of Kalapana, learn more about the world around you at Mokupapapa Discovery Center, and get to know the fascinating history of Pu'u Loa Petroglyphs.

For photos, maps, and tourist information, read our Hilo trip planner.

Expect a daytime high around 80°F in December, and nighttime lows around 65°F. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 2nd (Thu) so you can travel back home.
