The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Start off your visit on the 24th (Sun): explore the historical opulence of Nijo Castle and then contemplate the long history of Kiyomizu-dera Temple. Keep things going the next day: contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Kinkaku-ji, wander the streets of Gion, and then steep yourself in history at Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine.

Tokyo to Kyoto is an approximately 3-hour train ride. You can also fly; or drive. In March, daily temperatures in Kyoto can reach 16°C, while at night they dip to 5°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 25th (Mon) to allow enough time to take a train to Fukuoka.

The largest city on the island, Fukuoka formed through the merger of two former cities that had grown up either side of the Naka River.
Start off your visit on the 26th (Tue): get engrossed in the history at Fukuoka City Museum, see the interesting displays at Fukuoka Oriental Ceramics Museum, take in the spiritual surroundings of Torin-ji Temple, then get engrossed in the history at Fukuoka City Archaeology Center, and finally contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Kushida Shrine. Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the 27th (Wed): admire the striking features of Hakata Station, step off the mainland to explore Nokonoshima Island, and then get engrossed in the history at Seinan Gakuin University Museum.
