Little more than a small town at the turn of the 20th century, Dushanbe grew rapidly during the Soviet era and now serves as the national capital and home to nearly 800,000 people.You'll find plenty of places to visit near Dushanbe: Hisor Fortress (in Hisor), Nurek Dam (in Nurek) and Fann Mountains (in Ayni).
