One of the island of Hawaii's major towns, Hilo contains a mix of Asian and Polynesian cultures and is known for its proximity to a national park encompassing two active volcanoes.
Get out of town with these interesting Hilo side-trips: Holualoa (Sunshower Farms & Hula Daddy Kona Coffee), Lava Viewing Area (in Kalapana) and Kailua-Kona (The Vanillerie, Swim with Dolphins, & more). There's still lots to do: admire the majestic nature at Akaka Falls State Park, get a new perspective on nature at Mokupapapa Discovery Center, see the sky in a new way at Imiloa Astronomy Center, and go for a walk through Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden.

Gainesville to Hilo is an approximately 14-hour flight. You can also do a combination of bus and flight. Due to the time zone difference, you'll gain 5 hours traveling from Gainesville to Hilo. Traveling from Gainesville in January, you will find days in Hilo are a bit warmer (81°F), and nights are much warmer (64°F). Wrap up your sightseeing on the 17th (Fri) to allow time to drive to Waimea.

While traveling from Hilo, expect little chillier days and colder nights in Waimea, ranging from highs of 67°F to lows of 43°F. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 31st (Fri) so you can go by car to Captain Cook.
