Skiing enthusiasts traveling in Japan should consider a trip to Hakuba-mura: tucked away in the Northern Alps, this village hosted several competitions during the Nagano 1998 Winter Olympics.
Head to Karuizawa prince shopping plaza and Maihime Breweriesfor some retail therapy. Satisfy your inner culture vulture at Matsumoto Castle and Ueda Castle. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Hakuba-mura: Nagano (Komayumi Shrine, Zenkoji Sesonin Shakado Temple, &more), Obuse-machi (Hokusai-kan, Ganshoin Temple, &more) and Matsumoto (Matsumoto City Museum, Matsumoto City Timepiece Museum, &more). On the 12th (Sun), enjoy an adventurous day among the treetops at Karuizawa Prince Hotel Ski Resort. There's still lots to do: head outdoors with Hakuba Happoone Ski Resort, make a trip to Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, hike along Kitaone Kogen Highland, and look for all kinds of wild species at Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park.

For maps, more things to do, traveler tips, and more tourist information, you can read our Hakuba-mura trip maker site.

If you are flying in from New Zealand, the closest major aiports are Toyama Airport, Komatsu Airport and Niigata Airport. In December, plan for daily highs up to 7°C, and evening lows to 0°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 29th (Wed) early enough to travel back home.
