Caen is known for its historical buildings built during the reign of William the Conqueror, who was buried there, and for the Battle for Caen--heavy fighting that took place in and around Caen during the Battle of Normandy in 1944, destroying much of the city.
Get some historical perspective at Omaha Beach and Chateau Guillaume le Conquerant. Get some cultural insight at Musee de la Tapisserie de Bayeux and Bayeux War Cemetery. Get out of town with these interesting Caen side-trips: American Cemetery & Memorial (in Colleville-sur-Mer), Abbaye Saint-Martin de Mondaye (in Juaye-Mondaye) and Les Arpents du Soleil (in Saint-Pierre-sur-Dives). The adventure continues: pause for some photo ops at Pegasus Memorial (Memorial Pegasus) and explore the different monuments and memorials at Bretteville-sur-Laize Canadian War Cemetery.
