Kushiro first developed as an industrial hub thanks to its relatively ice-free harbor, and has since also become known as a transport hub for journeys to the east of the island.
Venture out of the city with trips to Teshikaga-cho (Lake Mashu, Lake Kussharo, & more), Lake Onneto (in Ashoro-cho) and Kaminoko Pond (in Kiyosato-cho). There's still lots to do: contemplate the waterfront views at Akan Lake, bet on a winner at Banei Tokachi Obihiro Horse Race Track, take in panoramic vistas at Kushiro Marsh Observatory, and identify plant and animal life at Akan International Crane Centre.

To find photos, ratings, other places to visit, and tourist information, go to the Kushiro trip itinerary planner.

If you are flying in from Singapore, the closest major airports are New Chitose Airport and Asahikawa Airport. In December, daily temperatures in Kushiro can reach 3°C, while at night they dip to -6°C. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 27th (Fri) so you can travel back home.
