The largest city on the island, Fukuoka formed through the merger of two former cities that had grown up either side of the Naka River.
Discover out-of-the-way places like Kitakyushu Museum of Natural History & Human History and Fukuoka City Museum. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Fukuoka: Nanatsugama Caves (in Karatsu), Yutoku Inari Shrine (in Kashima) and Tsutsukihama Beach (in Iki). There's much more to do: examine the collection at Nagasaki Peace Memorial Hall for the Atomic Bomb Victims, take an in-depth tour of Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum, stroll around Maizuru Park, and contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Tochoji Temple.

A modern city and a major transport hub facing Seto Inland Sea, Takamatsu offers a bustling city lifestyle contrasted with carefully manicured, tranquil green areas at the foot of the mountains and the lava plateau.
You'll discover tucked-away gems like Okuiya Niju Kazurabashi Bridge and Naoshima Bath. Venture out of the city with trips to Mt. Tsurugi (in Mima), Okayama (Okayama Kinshu Kaikan, Okayama Korakuen Garden, & more) and Bitchu Matsuyama Castle (in Takahashi). Next up on the itinerary: head off the coast to Sensui Island, take your sightseeing to a higher altitude at Mt. The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Koyasan Okunoin and Eikando Zenrinji Temple. Change things up with these side-trips from Kyoto: Koya-cho (Koyasan Danjo Garan & Kongobu-ji Temple), Nara (Toshodai-ji Temple, Nigatsu-do Temple, & more) and Ise Shrine Geku (in Ise). There's much more to do: contemplate the long history of Kiyomizu-dera Temple, stroll through Amanohashidate, take in the spiritual surroundings of Toji, and take in nature's colorful creations at Nanzen-ji Temple.
