The capital of Iraqi Kurdistan, Erbil occupies perhaps the longest-inhabited land in the world, with the earliest human settlement here possibly dating back to 5000 BCE.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Jalil Khayat and his Children's Mosque and Erbil Civilization Museum. Get out of town with these interesting Erbil side-trips: Kirkuk (Kirkuk Citadel & Bawa Gurgur Park). There's much more to do: get engrossed in the history at Syriac Heritage Museum, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Rashad Mufti Mosque, look for gifts at Yummy ice cream, and take in the dramatic scenery at Gali Ali Bag.

For other places to visit, reviews, ratings, and other tourist information, go to the Erbil sightseeing planner.

In September, daily temperatures in Erbil can reach 43°C, while at night they dip to 26°C. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 30th (Mon) so you can travel back home.
