A gateway to a sprawling and diverse national park, a center of Shinto spiritualism and place of Buddhist worship, an emblem of the riches and dominance of the Tokugawa shogunate: Nikko means many things to many people.
Step off the beaten path and head to Yudaki Falls and Senjogahara Field. There's much more to do: contemplate the waterfront views at Lake Chuzenji, snap pictures at Shinkyo Bridge, get in on the family fun at Edo Wonderland Nikko Edomura, and stroll around Nikko National Park.

You can take a train from Tokyo to Nikko in 2 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or take a bus. Traveling from Tokyo in October, you will find days in Nikko are slightly colder (67°F), and nights are about the same (62°F). You will have some time to spend on the 17th (Thu) before leaving for Kusatsu-machi.

On the 21st (Mon), take in the pleasant sights at Cedar Trees of Hakone Old Road. Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the next day: explore the world behind art at Hakone Museum of Art, then take your sightseeing to a higher altitude at Mt. Kintoki, then take in the spiritual surroundings of Choanji Temple, and finally get great views at Hakone Ropeway.
