Virtually unchanged for the last six centuries, Venice is actually a group of islands made famous by a series of canals, bridges, monuments, piazzas, and narrow pedestrian lanes.
Give yourself a bit of retail therapy at Piazza delle Erbe and Giudecca 795 Art Gallery. Let the collections at Doge's Palace and Gallerie dell'Accademia capture your imagination. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Venice: Verona (Porta dei Borsari, Arena di Verona, &more) and Padua (Battistero del Duomo, Basilica of St. Anthony, &more). There's still lots to do: make a trip to Piazza San Marco, contemplate the long history of Basilica dei Santi Giovanni e Paolo, pause for some serene contemplation at San Giorgio Maggiore, and contemplate the waterfront views at Canal Grande.
