A modern, bustling city known for its beer brewery, Sapporo attracts millions of visitors with its Snow Festival, during which elaborate ice and snow sculptures are exhibited all over town.
Step off the beaten path and head to Nikka Whisky Yoichi Distillery and Lake Toya. Venture out of the city with trips to Lake Shikotsu (in Chitose) and Oyunumagawa Natural Footbath (in Noboribetsu). There's still lots to do: hit the slopes at Mt. Okura Observatory, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Hokkaido Jingu, contemplate the waterfront views at Moerenuma Park, and get a sense of history and politics at Former Hokkaido Government Office Building.

Step off the beaten path and head to Shikisai no Oka and Patchwork no Michi. Change things up with these side-trips from Biei-cho: Campana Rokkatei (in Furano), Higashikawa-cho (Sugatami no Ike Lake & Asahi-dake) and Choei Lavender Farm (in Nakafurano-cho). Plan for slightly colder nights when traveling from Sapporo in September since evenings lows in Biei-cho dip to 14°C. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 4th (Wed) so you can go by car to Teshikaga-cho.
