A popular destination for Japanese tourists, Kumage-gun Yakushima-cho is a true paradise for nature lovers, with over 1,900 species and subspecies of plants.
Yaku Shrine and Yakusugi Museum are good opportunities to explore the local culture. You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Sandaisugi and Isso Beach. Venture out of the city with trips to Nakatane-cho (Nakatane Town Museum of History and Folklore, Obuchi Mebuchi no Taki Falls, & more). Spend the 3rd (Thu) exploring nature at Yakusugi Land. There's lots more to do: take your sightseeing to a higher altitude at Tachudake, discover the deep blue sea with a scuba or snorkeling tour, delve into the distant past at Ruins of Kosugidani Village, and look for all kinds of wild species at Okinasugi.

In January, daily temperatures in Yakushima-cho can reach 58°F, while at night they dip to 48°F. On the 12th (Tue), you'll travel back home.
