The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
For shopping fun, head to Dotonbori or Kyoto Station Building. Take a break from the city and head to Philosopher's Walk and Nara Park. Explore Kyoto's surroundings by going to Osaka (Osaka Castle, Shinsaibashi, & more) and Tōdai-ji (in Nara). There's lots more to do: contemplate the long history of Sanjusangendo Temple, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Ryoanji Temple, head outdoors with Arashiyama, and take some stellar pictures from Kiyomizu-dera.

Tokyo to Kyoto is an approximately 3-hour train ride. You can also do a combination of flight and train; or drive. Expect a bit cooler evenings in Kyoto when traveling from Tokyo in May, with lows around 17°C. Cap off your sightseeing on the 2nd (Fri) early enough to catch the train to Hiroshima.
