Situated on the confluence of the rivers Ouse and Foss, York has witnessed an abundance of major political events throughout its two millennia of existence.
World of James Herriot and York Cold War Bunker are good opportunities to explore the local culture. Step off the beaten path and head to Helmsley Castle and Selby Abbey. You'll find plenty of places to visit near York: Ryedale Folk Museum (in Hutton le Hole), The White Horse Inn (in Beverley) and Nunnington Hall (in Nunnington). There's still lots to do: steep yourself in history at Burton Agnes Hall, see the interesting displays at Fairfax House, take in the spiritual surroundings of Holy Trinity Church, and take in nature's colorful creations at Beningbrough Hall, Gallery and Gardens.
