A bustling port town noted as the site of two major battles in Japan's history, Shimonoseki also attracts gourmands as the world capital of the potentially poisonous pufferfish, or fugu--prepared only by licensed chefs and considered a delicacy.
Do some cultural sightseeing at Kaneko Misuzu Memorial Museum and Hagi Hakubutsukan. Museum-lovers will get to explore Old Ito Denemon House and Hagi Uragami Museum. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Shimonoseki: Hagi (Tokoji Temple, Birth Place of Shoin Yoshida, & more), Kirara Beach Yakeno (in Sanyo Onoda) and Ube (Ube Coastal Road & Tokiwa Park). There's still lots to do: make a trip to Kumano Magaibutsu, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Futagoji Temple, steep yourself in history at Ao Cave Tonnel, and get engrossed in the history at Kaiten Museum.

If you are flying in from Philippines, the closest major airports are Fukuoka Airport, Hiroshima Airport and Kagoshima Airport. In August, daytime highs in Shimonoseki are 36°C, while nighttime lows are 30°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 28th (Fri) so you can travel back home.
