Kids will appreciate attractions like Universal Studios Japan and Sumiyoshi Taisha Shrine. Get outdoors at Mt. Koya and Tannowa Beach. Get out of town with these interesting Osaka side-trips: Koya-cho (Koyasan Okunoin & Kongobu-ji Temple). Enjoying some of the warmest weather on Japan's main islands, Miyazaki thrived as a resort town in the 1980s, with hotels, beaches, and seafood restaurants galore.
Attractions like Udo Shrine and Kirishima Shrine make great kid-friendly stops. Satisfy your inner culture vulture at Aoshima Shrine and Yoshokan. Explore Miyazaki's surroundings by going to Kirishima (Furumi Site, Tajachiho Dry Riverbed, &more), Miyakonojo (Tsumakirishima Shrine, Takachiho Ranch, &more) and Hyuga (Cruss Sea, Omi Shrine, &more). There's still lots to do: make a trip to Onino Sentakuita, step off the mainland to explore Aoshima Island, take in the spiritual surroundings of Miyazaki Shinto Shrine, and get curious at Miyzaki Science Center.

The largest city on the island, Fukuoka formed through the merger of two former cities that had grown up either side of the Naka River.
Kids will enjoy Hakozaki Shrine and Saga Castle Hommaru History Museum. Satisfy your inner culture vulture at Yutoku Inari Shrine and Nijino Matsubara. Change things up with these side-trips from Fukuoka: Dazaifu Tenman-gu (in Dazaifu), Yoshinogari Historical Park (in Yoshinogari-cho) and Kaikyokan (in Shimonoseki). The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Get in touch with nature at Kamogawa River and Wakasa Wada Beach. You'll discover tucked-away gems like Toji and Eikando Zenrinji Temple. When in Kyoto, make a side trip to see Nara Park in Nara, approximately Nara away. There's lots more to do: contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Kinkaku-ji, steep yourself in history at Sanjusangendo Temple, take in the pleasant sights at Gion, and explore the historical opulence of Nijo Castle.
