With a nickname like the "Pearl of the Orient," it's not surprising Shanghai offers some of the most rewarding attractions and activities in the Far East.
Head to Nanjing Lu (Nanjing Road) and Former French Concessionfor some retail therapy. Get a sense of the local culture at The Bund (Wai Tan) and Jade Buddha Temple. Situated in a basin between two mountain ranges, Taipei appeals to tourists with its blend of Asian cultures, living side by side amidst Japanese-era mansions and Taoist temples.
Get a sense of the local culture at Chiufen (Jiufen Old Street) and Ximending. Head to Taipei 101 and Zhangyifangfor plenty of shopping. There's lots more to do: get engrossed in the history at National Palace Museum, steep yourself in history at The Lin Yutang House, appreciate the history behind Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall, and take in the spiritual surroundings of Xin Zhuang Ci You Temple.

Fly from Shanghai to Taipei in 5.5 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of train, bus, ferry, and car. Traveling from Shanghai in June, expect Taipei to be somewhat warmer, temps between 38°C and 30°C. Cap off your sightseeing on the 7th (Mon) early enough to go by car to Taichung.
