Deepen your sense of the past at sights like Nikko Tosho-gu and Okumiya. Get a sense of the local culture at Kegon Falls and Yudaki Falls. Step out of Nikko with an excursion to Oya History Museum in Utsunomiya--about 32 minutes away. There's still lots to do: explore the striking landscape of Nikko National Park, admire the sheer force of Ryuzu Waterfall, steep yourself in history at Taiyuimbyo Shrine, and soak in some Japanese tradition at some of the top local onsens.

Take a train from Tokyo to Nikko in 2 hours. Alternatively, you can drive. When traveling from Tokyo in December, plan for little chillier days and a bit warmer nights in Nikko: temperatures range from 11°C by day to 8°C at night. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 29th (Sun) early enough to drive to Fujikawaguchiko-machi.
