Get a sense of the local culture at Dotonbori and Chinatown (Nankinmachi). Do your shopping at Minami (Namba) and Kobe Harborland. Get out of town with these interesting Osaka side-trips: Nara (Nara Park, Kasuga Grand Shrine, & more). There's still lots to do: step into the grandiose world of Osaka Castle, meet the residents at Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan, see the interesting displays at Museum of Oriental Ceramics, and take in the views from Oe Bridge.

You can take a train from Hiroshima to Osaka in 2 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or do a combination of ferry, flight, and train. In August in Osaka, expect temperatures between 39°C during the day and 29°C at night. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 8th (Wed) early enough to take a train to Kyoto.

You can take a train from Kyoto to Kanazawa in 2.5 hours. Another option is to drive. While traveling from Kyoto, expect slightly colder days and about the same nights in Kanazawa, ranging from highs of 35°C to lows of 27°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 15th (Wed) early enough to drive to Takayama.

A gateway to a sprawling and diverse national park, a center of Shinto spiritualism and place of Buddhist worship, an emblem of the riches and dominance of the Tokugawa shogunate: Nikko means many things to many people.
Get some cultural insight at Nikko Tosho-gu and Taiyuimbyo Shrine. When in Nikko, make a side trip to see Sano Premium Outlet in Sano, approximately 56 minutes away. And it doesn't end there: tour the pleasant surroundings at Nikko National Park, explore the different monuments and memorials at Junshi (Self-Immolation) Graves, take in the dramatic scenery at Kegon Falls, and learn more about the world around you at Nikko Tamozawa Imperial Villa Memorial Park.

Traveling by car from Takayama to Nikko takes 5 hours. Alternatively, you can take a train; or do a combination of train, taxi, and flight. When traveling from Takayama in August, plan for a bit cooler days in Nikko, with highs around 32°C, while nights are about the same with lows around 29°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 20th (Mon) early enough to drive to Tokyo.
