Step out of Ishigaki with an excursion to Canyoning & Rappelling Tours in Iriomote-jima--about 1h 55 min away. There's still lots to do: contemplate the waterfront views at Kabira Bay, glide peacefully along the water with some of the best stand-up paddleboarding in the area, get outside with Yonehara Beach, and walk around Banna Park.

Venture out of the city with trips to Osaka (Osaka Castle & Dotonbori) and Universal Studios Japan (in Konohana). Take a train from Himeji to Kyoto in an hour. Alternatively, you can drive; or take a bus. Expect slightly colder evenings in Kyoto when traveling from Himeji in September, with lows around 23°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 17th (Thu) to allow time to take a train to Kanazawa.
