Explore Kyoto's surroundings by going to Osaka (Osaka Castle, Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan, & more). There's still lots to do: contemplate the long history of Kiyomizu-dera Temple, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine, step into the grandiose world of Nijo Castle, and make a trip to Heian Shrine.

Kick off your visit on the 18th (Mon): contemplate the long history of Yoneda Taishiji Temple, then step into the grandiose world of Himeji Castle, then admire the natural beauty at Kokoen Garden, and finally steep yourself in history at Nishi no Maru. Here are some ideas for day two: wander the streets of Kobe Harborland, examine the collection at Kawasaki Good Times World, and then wander the streets of Chinatown (Nankinmachi).

When in Nagasaki, make a side trip to see Huis Ten Bosch in Sasebo, approximately 1h 15 min away.
