A city jurisdiction formed after the merger of several towns in 2005, Miyakojima spans six linked-up islands.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Yonaha Maehama Beach and Toguchi no Hama. Visit Sunayama Beach and Hora Gyoko no Hama Beach for some beach relaxation. There's much more to do: kick back and relax at Aragusuku Beach, make a trip to East Henna Cape, enjoy the sea views from Higashi Hennazaki Lighthouse, and snap pictures at Irabu Bridge.

Do your shopping at Yurateiku Market and Nanapito Hompo. You'll get in some beach time at Kondoi Beach and Pemuchi Beach. Step out of Ishigaki with an excursion to Nishihama Beach in Hateruma-jima--about 1h 50 min away. The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
For shopping fun, head to Dotonbori or Minami (Namba). Get a sense of the local culture at Nijo-jo Castle and Kiyomizu-dera Temple. A gateway to the island, Hakodate has gained a reputation for its waterfront attractions, its proximity to some of the island's most popular natural sites, and its seafood.
Head to Kanemori Red Brick Warehouse and Hakodate Community Design Centerfor plenty of shopping. Explore hidden gems such as Hakodate Morning Market and The Old Public Hall of Hakodate Ward. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Hakodate: Michi-no-Eki Kaminokuni Monju (in Kaminokuni-cho) and Onuma Park Walking Path (in Nanae-cho).
