Taking a trip to Sandakan remains one of the best ways to enjoy eco-friendly and culturally rewarding adventures in one of Borneo's largest cities.
Get a sense of the local culture at Sandakan Rainforest Discovery Centre (RDC) and Agnes Newton Keith Home. Visiting Danum Valley Conservation Area and Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre (BSBCC) will get you outdoors. Take a break from Sandakan with a short trip to Kinabatangan Jungle Camp in Sukau, about 1h 30 min away. A largely residential city of around 135,000, Semporna has gained popularity in recent years due to its archipelago's good connection to the surrounding islands, including very popular diving or snorkeling destinations such as Sipadan.
Take a break from the city and head to Sipadan National Park and Tun Sakaran Marine Park. You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Bohey Dulang Island and Mataking Island. Next up on the itinerary: discover the deep blue sea with a scuba or snorkeling tour and contemplate the long history of Bukit Tengkorak (Skull Hill).
