The largest city on the island, Fukuoka formed through the merger of two former cities that had grown up either side of the Naka River.
Venture out of the city with trips to Dazaifu (Komyozen-ji Temple & Dazaifu Tenman-gu). There's lots more to do: take in the pleasant sights at Ohori Park, stroll around Maizuru Park, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Tenkai Inari Shrine, and admire the landmark architecture of Hakata Station.
