The castle around which the city of Himeji has developed represents one of the best preserved in the country, and has been designated as a national treasure and a World Heritage Site.
Get out of town with these interesting Himeji side-trips: Okayama Korakuen Garden (in Okayama), Awaga Shrine (in Asago) and Tendaki Falls (in Yabu). There's still lots to do: explore the historical opulence of Himeji Castle, make a trip to Daisen Outlook, take in the awesome beauty at Mt. You can take a train from Himeji to Kyoto in an hour. Alternatively, you can drive; or take a bus. October in Kyoto sees daily highs of 27°C and lows of 18°C at night. Finish your sightseeing early on the 8th (Tue) to allow enough time to drive to Takayama.

Hidden high up in the Japanese Alps, Takayama remained largely cut off from the rest of Japan for centuries, allowing the local culture to grow in relative isolation.
