Queensland’s biggest town and state capital, Brisbane has an attractive, manicured image based around its riverside aesthetic as well as the contrast between its high-rise center and extensive urban greenery.
Step off the beaten path and head to Dolphin & Whale Watching and City Botanic Gardens. Change things up with a short trip to Bee Gees Way in Redcliffe (about 46 minutes away). The adventure continues: wander the streets of West End, make a trip to Boggo Road Gaol (Jail), examine the collection at Museum of Brisbane, and get a sense of history and politics at City Hall.

You can fly from Sydney to Brisbane in 4 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of flight and bus; or drive. In December in Brisbane, expect temperatures between 32°C during the day and 23°C at night. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 11th (Fri) to allow time to travel to Cairns.

A neat, cosmopolitan city of shaded plazas and laid-back neighborhoods, Cairns serves as a popular base for exploration of the surrounding region and the Great Barrier Reef, as well as a center for watersport activities like surfing or waterskiing.
Step off the beaten path and head to Canyoning & Rappelling Tours and Atherton Tablelands. Get in touch with nature at Trinity Beach and Michaelmas Cay. Go for a jaunt from Cairns to Palm Cove to see Spas about 30 minutes away. There's still lots to do: let the river carry you with a rafting and tubing tour, let the kids burn off some steam at Muddy's Playground, admire the sheer force of Crystal Cascades, and pause for some photo ops at 1876 Landing Party.
