As the busy capital of São Miguel, Ponta Delgada represents the most visited place on the island. Known for its historical buildings, the city offers 17th- and 18th-century convents and churches, as well as cobbled pedestrian streets and hidden squares.

Though the town of Sagres has roots in the Portuguese Age of Discovery, it is better known by visitors as a peaceful, rugged resort spot with great surfing beaches.
Visit Fortaleza de Sagres and Cape Saint Vincent for their historical value. Step off the beaten path and head to Arrifana Beach and Praia do Beliche. Get out of town with these interesting Sagres side-trips: Rogil (Praia da Carriagem & Praia Vale Dos Homens). There's much more to do: see majestic marine mammals with a dolphin and whale watching tour, kick back and relax at Praia do Zavial, and tour the pleasant surroundings at Praia da Luz.

Castelo dos Mouros and Palacio Nacional de Sintra will appeal to history buffs. Discover out-of-the-way places like Baleal Beach and Porto da Areia Sul Beach. On the 7th (Tue), take some stellar pictures from Miradouro do Suberco, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Convent of Christ, then make a trip to Batalha Monastery, and finally take in the architecture and atmosphere at Basilica de Nossa Senhora do Rosario de Fatima. Referred to as the Portuguese Rome for its number churches, Braga represents an old town that today is the country's third-largest city. Situated in northwest Portugal, Braga boasts many narrow pedestrian streets, plazas, and spiritual pilgrimage destinations.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Santuario Nossa Senhora dos Remedios and Ponte Romana. Largo da Oliveira and Paco dos Duques de Braganca will appeal to history buffs. When in Braga, make a side trip to see Santuario de Santa Luzia in Viana do Castelo, approximately 50 minutes away.
