Tokyo holds the status of most populous metropolitan area in the world--a fact you'll find tangible as you walk the bustling streets and explore its diverse neighborhoods and cultures.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Meigetsuin (Hydrangea Temple) and Hokokuji Temple (Takedera Temple). Do some cultural sightseeing at Pola Museum of Art and Yanaka. Get out of town with these interesting Tokyo side-trips: Hakone Shisseikaen (in Hakone-machi) and Kamakura (Kencho-ji Temple & Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine). There's still lots to do: take in the spiritual surroundings of Asakusa Shrine, take a stroll through Marunouchi, contemplate the long history of Hozomon, and don't miss a visit to Shibuya Crossing.

For other places to visit, where to stay, ratings, and other tourist information, refer to the Tokyo visit planner .

Proud of their hometown's distinct culture and dialect, many natives of Osaka describe their city as "Japan's anti-capital." An antidote to Tokyo's hectic energy, Osaka marches to the beat of its own drum, serving as the country's longtime commercial and industrial hub.
Popular historic sites such as Koyasan Danjo Garan and Toshodaiji Temple are in your itinerary. Visiting Nara Park and Arima Onsen will get you outdoors. Explore Osaka's surroundings by going to Nara (Nigatsu-do Temple & Todai-ji Temple), Horyu-ji Temple (in Ikaruga-cho) and Kongobu-ji Temple (in Koya-cho). Next up on the itinerary: take in the spiritual surroundings of Hase-dera Temple, admire nature's wide array of creatures at Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan, make a trip to Hozenji Yokocho, and contemplate the long history of Sumiyoshi Taisha Shrine.
