The largest city on the island, Fukuoka formed through the merger of two former cities that had grown up either side of the Naka River.
Take a break from the city and head to Ohori Park and Miyajihama Beach. Head to Tenjin Underground Shopping Center and JR Hakata City Amu Plaza Hakatafor plenty of shopping. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Fukuoka: Dazaifu (Dazaifu Temmangu, Kyushu National Museum, & more), Itoshima (Shito Shrine, Keya Beach, & more) and Karatsu (Nijino Matsubara & Hado Misaki). Next up on the itinerary: take in the spiritual surroundings of Kushida Shrine, admire the landmark architecture of Hakata Station, kick back and relax at Tsutsukihama Beach, and admire the masterpieces at Fukuoka Asian Art Museum.

If you are flying in from Singapore, the closest major airport is Fukuoka Airport. In December in Fukuoka, expect temperatures between 13°C during the day and 5°C at night. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 4th (Sat) to allow time to take a train to Kumamoto.

Kick off your visit on the 5th (Sun): explore the wide array of goods at Tsuruya Department Store, look for gifts at KUMAMON products Nagataniya, admire the natural beauty at Suizenji Jojuen Garden, then don't miss a visit to Shimotori Shotengai, then contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Kato Shrine, and finally explore the historical opulence of Kumamoto Castle. Keep things going the next day: boost your wellbeing at a local thermal spa, then take your sightseeing to a higher altitude at Mt.Kinpozan Ichinotake, and then make a trip to Sakuranobaba Josaien.

You can take a train from Fukuoka to Kumamoto in an hour. Alternatively, you can drive; or take a bus. Expect a daytime high around 10°C in January, and nighttime lows around 1°C. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 6th (Mon) so you can go by car to Amakusa.

On the 9th (Thu), don't miss a visit to SL Hitoyoshi, take in the spiritual surroundings of Eikokuji, soak in some Japanese tradition at some of the top local onsens, then take in the spiritual surroundings of Aoiaso Shrine, and finally see the interesting displays at Hitoyoshi Rail Museum Mozoca Station 868. Here are some ideas for day two: stop by Michi-no-Eki Ebino, get engrossed in the history at Hitoyoshijo Castle History Museum, then get to know the fascinating history of Hitoyoshi Castle Ruins, and finally indulge your thirst for a good beer at Sengetsushuzo.

Enjoying some of the warmest weather on Japan's main islands, Miyazaki thrived as a resort town in the 1980s, with hotels, beaches, and seafood restaurants galore.
Start off your visit on the 11th (Sat): explore the striking landscape at Onino Sentakuita, head off the coast to Aoshima Island, and then take in the spiritual surroundings of Udo Shrine.
