Historians often describe Xi'an, capital city for over a dozen dynasties, as the birthplace of Chinese civilization.
Your inner history buff will appreciate Big Wild Goose Pagoda (Dayanta) and Xi'an City Wall (Chengqiang). You'll discover tucked-away gems like Han Yang Ling Museum and Shanxi Art Museum. You can do a combination of flight and bus from Xi'an to Lanzhou in 5 hours. Other options are to take a train; or drive. Traveling from Xi'an in July, things will get little chillier in Lanzhou: highs are around 30°C and lows about 15°C. On the 23rd (Thu), wrap the sightseeing up by early afternoon so you can travel to Jiayuguan.

The city of Jiayuguan has become particularly well known as the location of the Jiayu Pass, the best preserved and biggest of the passes of the Great Wall of China.
