The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Step off the beaten path and head to Jojakkoji Temple and Shoren-in Temple (Shoren-in Monzeki). Popular historic sites such as Gio-ji Temple and Mt. Kurama are in your itinerary. There's much more to do: contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Nishi Honganji, make a trip to Gion, explore the historical opulence of Nijo Castle, and steep yourself in history at Ninna-ji Temple.

Getting from Seoul to Kyoto by combination of flight and train takes about 6.5 hours. Other options: fly; or do a combination of train and ferry. Expect somewhat warmer weather when traveling from Seoul in October: highs in Kyoto hover around 74°F, while lows dip to 60°F. Finish your sightseeing early on the 3rd (Tue) so you can take a train to Osaka.

The country's second city, Busan has often been referred to as South Korea's summer capital.
Satisfy your inner culture vulture at Haedong Yonggung Temple and Birthplace of President Roh Moo-hyun. Visiting Songdo Beach and Geumjeongsan Mountain will get you outdoors. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Busan: Tongdosa Temple (in Yangsan), Gimhae (Tomb of King Suro & Gimhae National Museum) and Yeojwacheon Stream (in Changwon).
