The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
You'll discover tucked-away gems like Ninna-ji Temple and Shosei-en Garden. Do some cultural sightseeing at Sanjusangendo Temple and Kinkaku-ji. Step out of Kyoto to go to Nagahama and see Kurokabe Square, which is approximately 1h 45 min away. There's still lots to do: contemplate the long history of Kiyomizu-dera, wander the streets of Gion, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Fushimi Inari Taisha, and hike along Philosopher's Walk.

You can take a train from Tokyo to Kyoto in 3 hours. Other options are to do a combination of flight and train; or drive. Traveling from Tokyo in April, Kyoto is little chillier at night with lows of 11°C. Cap off your sightseeing on the 23rd (Sun) early enough to catch the train to Osaka.

Get a sense of the local culture at Okunoin and Tōdai-ji. Escape the urban bustle at Mount Koyasan and Nara Park. Change things up with these side-trips from Osaka: Kongobu-ji Temple (in Koya-cho), Momofuku Ando Instant Ramen Museum (in Ikeda) and Nara (Todaiji Temple Cultural Center & Kasuga Grand Shrine).
