The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Head to Dotonbori and Nishiki Market Shopping Districtfor some retail therapy. Explore Kyoto's surroundings by going to Universal Studios Japan (in Osaka) and Jikko Japanese Knife Shop Namba Skyo (in Namba). There's much more to do: contemplate the long history of Kiyomizu-dera Temple, step into the grandiose world of Nijo Castle, and take in the spiritual surroundings of Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine.

Boston, USA to Kyoto is an approximately 19-hour flight. You can also do a combination of flight and train. The time zone changes from Eastern Standard Time to Japan Standard Time, which is usually a 14 hour difference. Plan for a bit warmer temperatures traveling from Boston in July, with highs in Kyoto at 89°F and lows at 76°F. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 8th (Thu) to allow time to travel to Ishigaki.

Ishigaki, the most populous island in the chain, features the country's southernmost city and acts as a transport hub for exploring the landmasses that surround.
Start off your visit on the 9th (Fri): get outside with Outdoor Activities, then stop by Yurateiku Market, and then enjoy the sand and surf at Kondoi Beach. Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the 10th (Sat): visit a coastal fixture at Cape Hirakubozaki, enjoy breathtaking views from Tamatorizaki Observatory, then enjoy the sand and surf at Yonehara Beach, and finally enjoy breathtaking views from Maesedake Observation Site.

You can do a combination of train and flight from Kyoto to Ishigaki in 6 hours. Alternatively, you can fly. Expect a bit warmer evenings in Ishigaki when traveling from Kyoto in July, with lows around 82°F. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 10th (Sat) to allow time to ride a ferry to Iriomote-jima.

Iriomote-jima

Taketomicho Iriomote-Jima stands as the second largest island in Okinawa.
Kick off your visit on the 11th (Sun): scramble along the landscape with a canyoning and rapelling tour and then paddle through the water with a kayaking and canoeing tour. On the next day, make a trip to Funauki Village, then take in the dramatic scenery at Mizuochi Falls, then step off the mainland to explore Iriomote Island, and finally admire the sheer force of Pinaisara Falls.

Traveling by ferry from Ishigaki to Iriomote-jima takes an hour. In July, daytime highs in Iriomote-jima are 90°F, while nighttime lows are 82°F. Finish your sightseeing early on the 12th (Mon) so you can ride a ferry to Miyakojima.

A city jurisdiction formed after the merger of several towns in 2005, Miyakojima spans six linked-up islands.
Step off the beaten path and head to Sunayama Beach and Aragusuku Beach. There's still lots to do: kick back and relax at Toguchi no Hama, make a trip to East Henna Cape, explore the activities along Toriike Pond, and snap pictures at Kurima Bridge.

You can ride a ferry from Iriomote-jima to Miyakojima in 4 hours. In July in Miyakojima, expect temperatures between 89°F during the day and 80°F at night. Finish your sightseeing early on the 15th (Thu) to allow enough time to travel to Onna-son.

Onna-son

Located on the coast in the middle of the island, Onna-son has become known for its beaches and seaside economy.
You'll discover tucked-away gems like Scuba & Snorkeling and Onna Station Nakayukui Market. Change things up with these side-trips from Onna-son: Motobu-cho (Okichan Theater & Minnajima Island), Stand-Up Paddleboarding (in Nago) and AEONMALL OKINAWA RYCOM (in Kitanakagusuku-son).
