Start off your visit on the 20th (Mon): trek along Hakone Stone‐paved Road, contemplate the long history of Hakone Shrine / Kuzuryu Shrine Singu, then explore the world behind art at The Hakone Open-Air Museum, and finally explore the activities along Lake Ashi (Ashinoko). Here are some ideas for day two: don't miss a visit to Owaku-dani Valley, then take some stellar pictures from Hakone Ropeway, and then tour the pleasant surroundings at Lake Kawaguchi.

Take a train from Tokyo to Hakone-machi in 2 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or take a bus. When traveling from Tokyo in May, plan for little chillier days and about the same nights in Hakone-machi: temperatures range from 21°C by day to 19°C at night. You'll have a few hours on the 22nd (Wed) to wrap things up before traveling to Kyoto.
