The largest city on the island, Fukuoka formed through the merger of two former cities that had grown up either side of the Naka River.
Get a sense of the local culture at Dazaifu Temmangu Shrine and Mojiko Retro. Visit Kōmyōzen-ji Temple and Kokura Castle for their historical value. Venture out of the city with trips to Dazaifu Temmangu Annaijo (in Dazaifu) and Mojiko Station (in Kitakyushu). The adventure continues: let the kids burn off some steam at Ohori Park, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Kushida Shrine, wander the streets of Nishijin Shopping District, and admire the masterpieces at Fukuoka Asian Art Museum.
