The hilly port city of Nagasaki has become known internationally as one of the two Japanese cities to be destroyed by an atomic bomb towards the close of World War II.
Explore Nagasaki's surroundings by going to Sasebo (Huis Ten Bosch & Mt. Yumihari). The adventure continues: take an in-depth tour of Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum, get great views at Nagasaki Prefectural Government Observation Deck, take in the spiritual surroundings of Sofukuji Temple, and stroll around Nagasaki Peace Park.

Melbourne, Australia to Nagasaki is an approximately 17.5-hour flight. You can also do a combination of flight and train; or do a combination of bus and flight. The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Change things up with these side-trips from Kyoto: Universal Studios Japan (in Konohana) and Osaka (Osaka Castle & Dotonbori). There's still lots to do: steep yourself in history at Kiyomizu-dera Temple, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine, make a trip to Heian Shrine, and take a stroll through Gion.

You can take a train from Hiroshima to Kyoto in 2 hours. Other options are to drive; or take a bus. Expect a daytime high around 10°C in January, and nighttime lows around 1°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 11th (Sat) to allow enough time to take a train to Kanazawa.
