The hilly port city of Nagasaki has become known internationally as one of the two Japanese cities to be destroyed by an atomic bomb towards the close of World War II.
Step out of Nagasaki with an excursion to Huis Ten Bosch in Sasebo--about 1h 15 min away. And it doesn't end there: take an in-depth tour of Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum, walk around Nagasaki Peace Park, head off the coast to Hashima Island, and take in nature's colorful creations at Glover Garden.

The castle around which the city of Himeji has developed represents one of the best preserved in the country, and has been designated as a national treasure and a World Heritage Site.
Kick off your visit on the 14th (Wed): admire the natural beauty at Koko-en Garden, contemplate the long history of Nishi no Maru, don't miss a visit to Nishi no Maru Nagatsubone, then step into the grandiose world of Himeji Castle, and finally don't miss a visit to Shoshazan Engyoji. Keep things going the next day: steep yourself in history at Yoneda Taishiji Temple, take your sightseeing to a higher altitude at Mt. Takamikura, and then enjoy the sand and surf at Shimmaiko Beach.

Getting from Hiroshima to Himeji by train takes about an hour. Other options: drive; or do a combination of bus and train. In August, daily temperatures in Himeji can reach 86°F, while at night they dip to 80°F. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 15th (Thu) so you can catch the train to Kyoto.

The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
When in Kyoto, make a side trip to see Universal Studios Japan in Osaka, approximately 1h 15 min away. There's lots more to do: steep yourself in history at Kiyomizu-dera Temple, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Koshojibetsuin Ryozenhobyo, wander the streets of Gion, and don't miss a visit to Heian Shrine.

Getting from Himeji to Kyoto by train takes about an hour. Other options: drive; or take a bus. Traveling from Himeji in August, expect nights in Kyoto to be about the same, around 77°F, while days are somewhat warmer, around 92°F. Finish your sightseeing early on the 19th (Mon) to allow enough time to take a train to Kanazawa.
