Edinburgh Castle and Edinburgh Old Town will appeal to history buffs. Take a break from Edinburgh with a short trip to Aberdour Heritage Centre and Station Gardens in Aberdour, about 38 minutes away. There's still lots to do: steep yourself in history at The Real Mary King's Close, take in the local highlights with Walking tours, get a new perspective on nature at National Museum of Scotland, and step into the grandiose world of Palace of Holyroodhouse.

Fort William is the second largest settlement in the Highlands of Scotland with around 10,000 inhabitants – and the largest town: only the city of Inverness is larger.Fort William is a major tourist centre, with Glen Coe just to the south, Aonach Mòr to the east and Glenfinnan to the west, on the Road to the Isles. Visit Eilean Donan Castle and Invergarry Castle for their historical value. Venture out of the city with trips to Laggan (Laggan Parish Church & Well of the Seven Heads), Cille Choirill Church (in Roybridge) and Glenfinnan Church (in Glenfinnan). There's lots more to do: steep yourself in history at Glenfinnan Monument, appreciate the history behind Peace Memorial, take a memorable drive along General Wade’s Military Roads, and pause for some serene contemplation at MacIntosh Parish Church.

Go for a jaunt from Mallaig to Gorteneorn to see Camas an Lighe (Singing Sands) about 48 minutes away. And it doesn't end there: stroll the grounds of Camas nan Geall, delve into the distant past at Maelrubha's Chapel, contemplate the long history of John O' Groats, and enjoy some diversion at Mallaig Pool & Leisure.

Lochinver is a village on the coast in the Assynt district of Sutherland, Highland, Scotland. Get some historical perspective at Dun Dornaigil Broch and Ardvreck Castle. Explore Lochinver's surroundings by going to Ullapool (Ullapool Hill, Inverpolly Nature Reserve, & more) and Stoer Lighthouse (in Lairg).
