The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Museum-lovers will get to explore Kyoto Museum of Crafts and Design and Todaiji Temple Cultural Center. Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine and Kiyomizu-dera Temple will appeal to history buffs. Explore the numerous day-trip ideas around Kyoto: Nara (Rokuen & Nara Park). There's still lots to do: make a trip to Nijo Castle, take in the spiritual surroundings of Ginkakuji Temple, meet the residents at Monkey Park Iwatayama, and contemplate the long history of Yasaka Shrine.

Getting from Oita to Kyoto by train takes about 4.5 hours. Other options: fly; or drive. In March, daily temperatures in Kyoto can reach 16°C, while at night they dip to 5°C. Cap off your sightseeing on the 17th (Sun) early enough to travel to Bangkok.

Fly from Kyoto to Bangkok in 10 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of car and ferry. The time zone difference moving from Japan Standard Time (JST) to Indochina Time (ICT) is minus 2 hours. Traveling from Kyoto in March, things will get much hotter in Bangkok: highs are around 40°C and lows about 30°C. On the 25th (Mon), wrap the sightseeing up by early afternoon so you can travel back home.
