A gateway to a sprawling and diverse national park, a center of Shinto spiritualism and place of Buddhist worship, an emblem of the riches and dominance of the Tokugawa shogunate: Nikko means many things to many people.
Yomeimon (Main Gate) and Nikko Tosho-gu will appeal to history buffs. Get in touch with nature at Lake Chuzenji and Kammangafuchi Gorge. Spend the 7th (Wed) exploring nature at Nikko National Park. Next up on the itinerary: take in the dramatic scenery at Yudaki Falls, contemplate the long history of Hongu Shrine, hike along Odashirogahara, and make a trip to Senjogahara Field.

The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Do some cultural sightseeing at Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine and Nijo Castle. Head to Dotombori District and Sanbido Karasuma Hontenfor some retail therapy. Step out of Kyoto with an excursion to Minami (Namba) in Namba--about 1h 10 min away. There's lots more to do: steep yourself in history at Kiyomizu-dera Temple, take in the spiritual surroundings of Kinkaku-ji, wander the streets of Gion, and make a trip to Eikando Zenrinji Temple.

Traveling by train from Nikko to Kyoto takes 5 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or fly. Traveling from Nikko in October, you will find days in Kyoto are a bit warmer (°C), and nights are about the same (°C). A popular destination for Japanese tourists, Kumage-gun Yakushima-cho is a true paradise for nature lovers, with over 1,900 species and subspecies of plants.
Start off your visit on the 13th (Tue): make a trip to Taikoiwa, explore the stunning scenery at Shiratani Unsuikyo Valley, thendon't miss a visit to Wilson Stump, and finally kick back and relax at Nagata Inakahama. On the 14th (Wed), you'll have a packed day of sightseeing: look for all kinds of wild species at Yakusugi Land.

Miyakojima

A city jurisdiction formed after the merger of several towns in 2005, Miyakojima spans six linked-up islands.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Aragusuku Beach and Scuba & Snorkeling. Step out of the city life by going to Yabiji and Shimojiiima Island. There's lots more to do: kick back and relax at Sunayama Beach, step off the mainland to explore Ikema-jima Island, take in the pleasant sights at Imugya Marine Garden, and take in the views from Irabu Ohashi.

Getting from Hiroshima to Miyakojima by combination of train and flight takes about 5 hours. Other options: fly. Plan for somewhat warmer temperatures traveling from Hiroshima in October, with highs in Miyakojima at °C and lows at °C. Ishigaki, the most populous island in the chain, features the country's southernmost city and acts as a transport hub for exploring the landmasses that surround.
Visit Cape Hirakubozaki and Island Countryside Settlement for their historical value. Take a break from the city and head to Yonehara Beach and Kabira Bay. There's lots more to do: glide peacefully along the water with some of the best stand-up paddleboarding in the area, walk around Banna Park, get outside with Kondoi Beach, and take a leisurely stroll along Nishi Pier.
