The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Explore hidden gems such as Tofuku-ji Temple and Kennin-ji Temple. Do some cultural sightseeing at Nijo Castle and Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine. When in Kyoto, make a side trip to see Dotonbori in Osaka, approximately 1h 10 min away. There's still lots to do: contemplate the long history of Kiyomizu-dera Temple, stop by Ippuya, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Kinkaku-ji, and take a stroll through Gion.
