Tokyo holds the status of most populous metropolitan area in the world--a fact you'll find tangible as you walk the bustling streets and explore its diverse neighborhoods and cultures.
Have a day of magic on the 9th (Thu) at Tokyo Disneyland. Next up on the itinerary: don't miss a visit to Meiji Jingu Shrine, take in nature's colorful creations at Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden, admire the landmark architecture of Tokyo Skytree, and have some family-friendly fun at Owl cafe Akiba Fukurou.

Melbourne, Australia to Tokyo is an approximately 14.5-hour flight. You can also do a combination of train and flight. The time zone difference moving from Australian Eastern Standard Time (Victoria) to Japan Standard Time is minus 1 hour. Expect colder temperatures when traveling from Melbourne in January; daily highs in Tokyo reach 11°C and lows reach 1°C. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 9th (Thu) so you can catch the train to Kanazawa.

An old castle town largely unspoiled during World War II, Kanazawa features well-preserved architecture spread across a range of districts.
Get out of town with these interesting Kanazawa side-trips: Shirakawa-mura (Shirakawago Gassho Zukuri Minkaen & The Historic Villages of Shirakawa-go Gassho Style Houses). There's lots more to do: stroll around Kenrokuen Garden, wander the streets of Higashichaya Old Town, make a trip to Omicho Market, and explore the world behind art at 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa.

Getting from Tokyo to Kanazawa by train takes about 2.5 hours. Other options: fly; or drive. Expect little chillier weather when traveling from Tokyo in January: highs in Kanazawa hover around 7°C, while lows dip to 0°C. Cap off your sightseeing on the 12th (Sun) early enough to catch the train to Kyoto.

The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Get out of town with these interesting Kyoto side-trips: Osaka (Universal Studios Japan & Osaka Castle). And it doesn't end there: contemplate the long history of Kiyomizu-dera Temple, take in the spiritual surroundings of Kinkaku-ji, make a trip to Heian Shrine, and go for a walk through Arashiyama.

Take a train from Kanazawa to Kyoto in 2.5 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or take a bus. In January, daytime highs in Kyoto are 10°C, while nighttime lows are 1°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 16th (Thu) early enough to take a train to Hiroshima.

Grapple with history and appreciate modernity in Hiroshima, a city known around the world for its tragic past and inspiring rebirth.
Venture out of the city with trips to Hatsukaichi (Miyajima, Itsukushima Shrine Torii, & more). There's lots more to do: examine the collection at Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, pause for some photo ops at Atomic Bomb Dome, get engrossed in the history at Hiroshima National Peace Memorial Hall for the Atomic Bomb Victims, and admire the natural beauty at Shukkei-en Garden.

You can take a train from Kyoto to Hiroshima in 2 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or take a bus. In January, plan for daily highs up to 11°C, and evening lows to 2°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 19th (Sun) to allow time to take a train to Nagasaki.

The hilly port city of Nagasaki has become known internationally as one of the two Japanese cities to be destroyed by an atomic bomb towards the close of World War II.
Go for a jaunt from Nagasaki to Sasebo to see Huis Ten Bosch about 1h 15 min away. There's still lots to do: take an in-depth tour of Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum, look for gifts at Tatematsuru, see the interesting displays at Nagasaki Peace Memorial Hall for the Atomic Bomb Victims, and appreciate the history behind Hypocenter of Atomic Bombing.

On the 23rd (Thu), step into the grandiose world of Shurijo Castle, look for gifts at Fukurasha, then make a trip to Makishi Public Market, then have some family-friendly fun at Ryuso Studio Chura Bijin, and finally make a trip to Kokusaidori. Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the next day: see the interesting displays at Okinawa Karate Kaikan, then make a trip to Okinawa World Culture Kingdom Gyokusendo, then contemplate the long history of Sefa-Utaki, and finally examine the collection at Haebaru Town Museum.
