Hilo, Island of Hawaii

Hilo ©
One of the island of Hawaii's major towns, Hilo contains a mix of Asian and Polynesian cultures and is known for its proximity to a national park encompassing two active volcanoes.
You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at 49 Black Sand Beach and Pacific Tsunami Museum. Your inner history buff will appreciate Puukohola Heiau and Pu'u Loa Petroglyphs. Venture out of the city with trips to Laupahoehoe Beach Park (in Laupahoehoe), Hawaii Volcanoes National Park (Devastation Trail, Holei Sea Arch, &more) and Puukohola National Historic Park (in Kawaihae). There's still lots to do: tour the pleasant surroundings at Richardson Beach Park, kick back and relax at Carlsmith Beach Park, experience rural life at Honomu Goat Dairy, and don't miss a visit to Pepeekeo Scenic Drive.

To find other places to visit, ratings, and other tourist information, go to the Hilo trip planner.
