Dongola, also spelled Dunqulah, and formerly known as Al 'Urdi, is the capital of the state of Northern in Sudan, on the banks of the Nile, and a former Latin Catholic bishopric (14th century). Go for a jaunt from Dongola to Kerma to see Kerma's Archeological Site about 1h 25 min away. There's still lots to do: steep yourself in history at Third Cataract of the Nile and appreciate the extensive heritage of Old Dongola.
