The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Eikando Zenrinji Temple and Kofuku-ji Temple. Your inner history buff will appreciate Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine and Nijo Castle. Explore Kyoto's surroundings by going to Dotonbori (in Osaka), Todai-ji Temple (in Nara) and Himeji Castle (in Himeji). There's still lots to do: contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Kinkaku-ji, get to know the fascinating history of Hieizan Enryaku-ji Temple, contemplate the long history of Sanjusangendo Temple, and don't miss a visit to Kiyomizu-dera Temple.

Playa del Carmen, Mexico to Kyoto is an approximately 22-hour combination of bus, flight, and train. You can also do a combination of ferry and flight; or do a combination of bus and flight.
